UKIP MEP quits as whip over anti-Islam candidate

A senior UKIP MEP has resigned as deputy whip in the European Parliament over support within the party for an anti-Islam campaigner. Anne Marie Waters, who founded the Sharia Watch pressure group and has called Islam “evil”, has been allowed to stand in UKIP’s leadership election. A pledge to ban the full-face veils worn by some Muslim women is expected to be included in the UK Independence Party’s general election manifesto. UKIP’s Douglas Carswell is quitting the party to become an independent MP and says he is doing so “amicably”. The party’s only MP defected from the Conservatives to UKIP in 2014. UKIP officials quit in Hillsborough row

Two UKIP officials have resigned from the party, claiming leader Paul Nuttall and donor Arron Banks showed “crass insensitivity” about the Hillsborough disaster. Paul Nuttall has been elected leader of the UK Independence Party, replacing Nigel Farage. The 39-year-old Member of the European Parliament, who served as UKIP’s deputy leader for six years, won 62.6% of support among party members.
