Investors call for Tesla changes. Musk tells them to buy Ford

Inside Tesla’s enormous battery factory Elon Musk has some sharp words for shareholders who want changes to Tesla’s board of directors: buy Ford shares instead. The Tesla CEO used Twitter to fire back at a group of investors who called for the electric car maker’s board to add two new directors who have no ties to Musk. Musk responded to a Reuters article about a letter from the group, which said new independent directors are needed to “provide a critical check on possible dysfunctional group dynamics.” “This investor group should ...

Bucs' 9-7 season helping them become winners in free agency

4:10 PM ET TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers narrowly missed the playoffs in 2016, but that 9-7 season went a long way in helping lure free agents DeSean Jackson and Chris Baker to Tampa Bay. They were watching closely as their former team, the Washington Redskins, were fighting with the Bucs for a playoff spot late in the season. “[We] were kind of like, they would lose and we would lose; we would win and they would win,” Jackson said. “Seeing and keeping up with the playoff race ...

New GOP bill lets companies force you to take genetic tests, lets them share results with third parties

A new bill introduced by Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and approved by the House Ways and Means Committee would allow corporations to force employees to undergo genetic testing — and then share those results with third parties. In theory, this is already illegal, thanks to a 2008 law known as GINA. This type of behavior is also regulated by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). The new House bill, HR 1313, gets around these issues by preemptively declaring that workplace wellness programs offered in conjunction with an employer’s sponsored health care ...

Blue Devils will go as far as Grayson Allen will take them

9:52 PM ET NEW YORK — David Levitch, a generously listed 6-foot-3, 180-pound twig of a player who is so rail-thin his shorts need an extra roll down to stay attached to his hips, does not look the type to figure into a basketball kerfuffle. But Levitch was defending Grayson Allen, and things seem to happen when Allen is involved. What happened between the ACC tournament quarterfinal between Levitch and Allen not only changed the tenor of the game between Louisville and Duke, it might just change how this season ...

State politics are the next battleground — and tracking them just got easier

Jack Dorsey: Twitter shows best and worst of democracy As it gets harder for the federal government to pass meaningful legislation, what happens at the state and local level is increasingly important. Following statehouse policies has never been easy — but one website is changing that. Digital Democracy is a tool that lets you search for issues at the state level as easily as you might search for something in Google. The site, developed at the Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policy (IATPP) at California Polytechnic State University, launched ...

Homeopathic solutions now have to be labeled to disclose that there’s no science behind them

The FTC is playing whack-a-mole with pseudoscience again, and this time it’s targeting homeopathy. Their latest comments contend (PDF) that the standard disclaimer isn’t enough to dissuade consumers from buying this crap, so now not only do homeopathic products have to carry the standard disclaimer, they also have to say there’s no science behind them. I support the idea that it’s your body, so do with it what you want, and if taking homeopathic sugar pills makes you feel better, sure, keep taking them. But the only reason I can’t ...

HP backtracks on third-party ink cartridges, reserves right to lock them out it in the future

HP came under fire last week when a firmware update it pushed out six months ago kicked in and locked out third-party ink cartridges for a number of the company’s OfficeJet printers. The move surprised and infuriated several thousand people who suddenly found themselves with malfunctioning printers, who promptly blasted the company for its actions. Now, HP is walking back its new firmware — but it won’t promise not to reactivate it at a later time. HP writes: There is confusion in the market regarding a printer firmware update – here ...

Tardigrade DNA inserted into human cells gives them X-ray resistance

A study just broke out of Tokyo that says some eyebrow-raising things about water bears and their DNA. First among the revelations is the finding that water bears might not be all that much not-tardigrade at all. Remember that story about the tardigrade genome being about 17% foreign DNA? The Tokyo University team suspected that might have been because of contamination. So, for their own experiments, they took some extra precautions when getting ready to make their little vials of extract of tardigrade. And by precautions, I mean dosing the water ...
