We are closer than ever to 1930s-style totalitarianism: Atwood

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The world is closer to the dark days of the 1930s than at any time since, Canadian author Margaret Atwood said on Saturday in Frankfurt, where she was due to receive a prestigious German literary award. Atwood’s dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale”, first published in 1985, has shot back up the bestseller lists after being made into an award-winning TV series depicting a totalitarian future in a United States where women are forced into sexual servitude. Yellowstone National Park is currently a placid and majestic landscape, but lurking beneath the surface is a supervolcano that wreaks widespread havoc whenever it awakens. Scientists have long expected it would take centuries for Yellowstone to transition to an active volcano again, but now they’re cutting that timeline down to as little as a few decades. The Yellowstone Caldera has erupted three times over the last 2.1 million years. It would have been a perilous ...

Samsung Will Make $4B More Off the iPhone X Than Its Own Galaxy S8

If mathematicians are collectively devices for turning coffee into theorems, as Alfréd Rényi once remarked, phone patents and purchase agreements are devices for turning patents into gobs and gobs of cash. Devices and technologies are so intertwined, it’s not unusual to see companies that compete in the same market and for the same customers buying and licensing technology from one another. It’s well known Samsung and Apple collectively extract virtually all of the profit from ...

There Might Be More Water Ice on Mars Than We Thought

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. We once thought of Mars as a dried up husk of a planet with no significant water resources on its surface. After further study, scientists have discovered the Red Planet has vast amounts of water ice, and there may even be some water flowing on its surface. Mars’ water reserves may even be more accessible than we believed. A new analysis of past NASA data points to water ice near the Martian equator where scientists ...

Drones are more helpful than ever in hurricane-ravaged Texas and Florida

The view from the ground after a devastating hurricane is heartbreaking. The view from the sky is more revealing. Unmanned aircraft — small and large — swooped in during the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey to get a glimpse of the devastation. That’s why insurance companies have been using drone technology more than ever before to quickly — and safely — assess damage from the storm. It’s only been fairly recently that commercial drone technology has advanced enough to take on this task on a large economic scale. And ...

Earlier this week, we reported on news that the popular system maintenance app CCleaner had been infected by malware for nearly a month. We now know the attack was worse than initially thought. The CCleaner malware could be used to deliver a second-stage payload that would run on local systems and perform various tasks. This isn’t an unusual malware feature, but researchers didn’t think the capability had been used in this case. We now know ...

Police and prison staff to get more than 1% pay cap

The government has announced pay rises for police and prison officers which breach the 1% public sector pay cap. Prison officers will get a 1.7% rise while police will get a 1% pay rise plus a 1% bonus for the year, paid for from existing departmental budgets. No 10 also signalled the end of the 1% pay cap, saying they recognised the need for more flexibility in future. But the TUC said the pay rises being offered were “derisory” and would not address staff shortages. And Steve White, chairman of ...

Nintendo Switch Hits 1.5M Sales In Japan A Lot Faster Than PS4 Did There

According to newly released figures, the Nintendo Switch has reached 1.5 million sales in Nintendo’s home country of Japan since launch in March. That’s a big number, and to put it in context, it’s significantly better than the start for the PlayStation 4 in 2013. The Switch reached 1.5 million sales after 26 weeks in Japan. By comparison, after the PS4’s first 26 weeks on sale in Japan, the console sold around 665,000 units. It took the PS4 69 weeks to reach 1.5 million units sold in Japan. All of ...
