Raqqa: The desperate fight for Islamic State group's ‘capital’

Media playback is unsupported on your device So-called Islamic State is defending its Syrian “capital” against a major offensive by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters. The BBC’s Gabriel Gatehouse is one of the first reporters to reach the city. This has been a long and brutal road. Driving through the suburbs of Raqqa towards the centre, we pass collapsed buildings, hit by American air strikes, and pockmarked shop fronts, caught between the advance of the SDF and the retreating fighters who call ...

Golden State reclaims title with a most Warrior-like run

12:01 AM ET OAKLAND, Calif. — If the Golden State Warriors couldn’t achieve perfection, they’ll just have to settle for redemption and justification. After Kawhi Leonard limps off, Spurs fall to epic comeback in Golden State

11:53 PM ET OAKLAND, Calif. — Kawhi Leonard walked slowly and deliberately through the quiet loser’s locker room. No limp, no brace, no tape covering the sprained left ankle that buckled with 7 minutes, 53 seconds left in the third quarter of the San Antonio Spurs’ 113-111 loss Sunday in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals to the Golden State Warriors. In fact, the All-Star forward never deviated from his normal, pigeon-toed gait on the way to the athletic training room. The only strangeness witnessed here is the fact ...
