Michigan State breaks the Big House's heart again

12:03 AM ET ANN ARBOR, Mich. — When the skies opened up, Michigan took to the air. It cost the Wolverines another loss to in-state rival Michigan State and perhaps a shot at oh, so much more. During a stretch of three drives that spanned the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, while sheets of rain soaked the Big House, the Wolverines’ offensive staff dialed up 11 passes on 14 plays for a second-string quarterback making his second start in Ann Arbor. John O’Korn completed ...

Oklahoma's playoff hopes take blow with stunning loss to Iowa State

5:44 PM ET NORMAN, Okla. — Behind a third-string quarterback and an iron-man linebacker, Iowa State pulled off the upset of the season on Saturday, stunning third-ranked Oklahoma in Norman 38-31. The Cyclones also turned the Big 12 race, shook up the College Football Playoff conversation and sent the Sooners spiraling into the Red River Showdown. With 2:19 to play, Kyle Kempt tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard, who leapt over a pair of Sooners defenders to come down with the game-winning reception. Walk-on Kyle Kempt helped lead ...

Washington State joins the playoff conversation with win over USC

3:11 AM ET PULLMAN, Wash. — As expected, Friday night’s showdown between No. 5 USC and No. 16 Washington State featured a College Football Playoff contender and a Heisman Trophy candidate. Not as expected: The Cougars are that team and their quarterback, Luke Falk, is that candidate. Before a sold-out crowd of 33,773 and in one of the best atmospheres that Martin Stadium has ever seen, Washington State secured what could go down as one of the biggest wins in program history. Its 30-27 win over the Trojans is arguably ...

Third of state schools in cash deficit

“We’re trying to operate on a shoestring,” says Tim Rawling, chair of governors of a South Gloucestershire primary school. Staple Hill Primary School is expecting to go into budget deficit this year, with fears of cuts and job losses. It will not be alone as there were more than 9,000 state schools in England in a similar position last year, according to figures revealed by ministers. Schools minister Nick Gibb said schools would have “the resources they need”. The figures were revealed in an answer to a parliamentary question about ...

Massachusetts will hit Equifax with first state lawsuit over data breach

Equifax hack: What you need to know Equifax is facing its first lawsuit from a state prosecutor’s office over a massive security breach that exposed the personal data of up to 143 million Americans. Maura Healey, the attorney general of Massachusetts, announced her official intent to take Equifax to court on Tuesday. “In all of our years investigating data breaches, this may be the most brazen failure to protect consumer data we have ever seen,” said Healey, a Democrat, in a statement. Massachusetts will claim that Equifax did not “maintain ...

Oklahoma plants its flag in payback win at Ohio State

Sep 9, 2017 Let’s consider this “Show-Me-Something” Saturday. This was a chance for a few of the top teams in the country to give us a little more clarity on who they truly are. Well, it’s pretty clear that Oklahoma isn’t going to let Bob Stoops’ retirement spoil its chance to make a run to the College Football Playoff. The fifth-ranked Sooners absolutely manhandled No. 2 Ohio State 31-16 in Columbus. A year after hearing chants of “O-H, I-O” inside their own stadium, the Sooners brought the boom to The ...

Oklahoma, Ohio State look to answer early playoff questions

Sep 7, 2017 It’s quite possible that no team in the College Football Playoff era has experienced the benefits and consequences of aggressive nonconference scheduling like Oklahoma. In 2015, the Sooners’ gritty win at Tennessee was a major reason they finished No. 4 in the selection committee’s final rankings. Last year, their 0-2 start against Houston and Ohio State was the main reason OU was left out of the playoff — in spite of going on to run the table and win the Big 12. As Oklahoma heads to Columbus ...

Alabama reasserts itself as No. 1 against Florida State

3:54 AM ET ATLANTA — It didn’t happen quickly. Florida State had too many athletes to be beaten out of the chute quite like that. Rather, No. 1-ranked Alabama kept chipping away until all that was left was the familiar sight of a broken opponent and the inevitable conclusion that a Nick Saban-coached team wasn’t going to lose a game of this magnitude to start the season. It was vintage Saban: defense, special teams, ball control. It was slow, methodical and brutally physical at times. Four of Alabama’s linebackers were ...

Bama uses familiar recipe to beat Florida State

12:02 AM ET ATLANTA — For most of three quarters on Saturday night, No. 1 Alabama couldn’t pull away from No. 3 Florida State in their season opener at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. Whenever Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts tried to run outside, Seminoles safety Derwin James or someone else was waiting for him. When Tide running backs Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris tried to run up the middle, there was practically nowhere for them to go. With the Crimson Tide and Seminoles locked in a heavyweight battle in the first ...
