Grenfell Tower: Cladding firm ends global sales for tower blocks

The US firm that supplied cladding used on London’s Grenfell Tower says it has ended global sales of the product for use in high-rise blocks. Arconic said it was discontinuing sales of Reynobond PE for tower blocks due to “issues” identified by the fire, which is feared to have killed at least 79. The government said 75 buildings in 26 council areas had now failed fire safety tests – every one tested so far. Theresa May said councils need to speed up tower block safety tests in England. Auction houses see signs of art market uptick ahead of New York sales

By Chris Michaud| NEW YORK As auction powerhouses Christie’s and Sotheby’s gear up for their New York spring sales, hopes are high that a host of major works the likes of which have not hit the block for several seasons will reap strong, even record, prices. After years of gangbuster results marked by soaring prices, both auction houses staged relatively modest sales last year, owing largely, they say, to hesitancy on the part of consignors in an unsettled global market. No works carried estimates much beyond $ 40 million, in ...

E-reader Sales Slack as Paper Books Reclaim Market Share

If you have an e-reader collecting dust on a bookshelf somewhere, forgotten in the same place you’ve had it tucked for the last umpteen months, you’re not alone. Recent data from the Publisher’s Association indicate a major market trend back toward treeware, as ebook and e-reader sales continue to slump from their 2011 peak. It’s not clear whether the enduring popularity of tablets might be responsible for some of this change; if tablets have usurped some e-reader market share, that could explain things. According to Euromonitor International, a consumer research ...

Windows Phone Is Dead and Surface Sales are Slipping

Microsoft announced its quarterly results last night, and the figures were generally good, with revenue of $ 23.6 billion (up 6%), increased operating income, and higher earnings per share. The one ugly spot was More Personal Computing — the business segment that includes Windows 10, Bing, Surface devices, Windows Phone, and the Xbox business. Here’s how Microsoft’s CFO, Amy Hood, described the situation: [R]evenue was $ 8.8 billion, declining 7 percent, as Phone and Surface results offset healthy growth in Windows, search, and gaming. Our OEM business grew 5% this ...
