Michael Barrymore to get damages over rape and murder arrest

The entertainer Michael Barrymore is to get “more than nominal damages” after claiming his wrongful arrest by police destroyed his career. The 65-year-old was detained 10 years ago on suspicion of the rape and murder of Stuart Lubbock in Essex. Sarah Champion quits Labour front bench over rape article

Labour shadow minister Sarah Champion has quit the party’s front bench after criticism over a newspaper article she wrote about grooming gangs. The Rotherham MP wrote in the Sun on Friday that “Britain has a problem with British Pakistani men raping and exploiting white girls”. Boy arrested after attempted rape of girl, 8, in Manchester

A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted rape of an eight-year-old girl in a park. Police were called to Nuthurst Park in Moston, Manchester, just before 18:55 BST on Saturday. Greater Manchester Police said officers responded to reports of a girl being raped and the offender being chased off by members of the public. Sweden’s director of public prosecutions has decided to drop the rape investigation into Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Marianne Ny said his arrest warrant was being revoked as it was impossible to serve him notice of his alleged crimes. Mr Assange, 45, has lived in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012, fearing extradition to Sweden would lead to extradition to the US. A rape victim whose attack led to a judge saying drunk women were putting themselves in danger has defended the comments, saying the judge was “right”. A female judge’s warning that drunk women are putting themselves at greater risk of rape was “victim-blaming”, a police commissioner has said. Judge Lindsey Kushner QC said women were entitled to “drink themselves into the ground” but their “disinhibited behaviour” could put them in danger. A woman who became a sexual assault campaigner after she was raped during a burglary at her father’s vicarage has died after suffering a stroke. Jill Saward, then 21, was sexually assaulted by two men in Ealing, west London, in 1986. Her father Michael, and her boyfriend were severely beaten. Footballer Ched Evans has been found not guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room. The Chesterfield striker was accused of attacking her at a Premier Inn in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, on 30 May 2011. Mr Evans, 27, was originally found guilty of rape at Caernarfon Crown Court in 2012, but this conviction was quashed in April.
