Cassini probe set to begin ‘Grand Finale’ dive into Saturn’s atmosphere

We’ve enjoyed the benefits of having NASA’s Cassini spacecraft in orbit of Saturn for years. It’s almost like it’s always been there, looking down on one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the solar system. It only seems like forever because Cassini has sent back so much amazing stuff. Cassini began its observation of Saturn in 2004, and now it’s time for the probe’s final act as it runs low on fuel. Later this month, the spacecraft will begin a downward spiral that eventually sends it into Saturn’s crushing atmosphere. It’ll see ...

Upcoming NASA probe will fly into the sun’s corona

The sun is a giant nuclear fireball that, as a rule, melts anything that comes close. Yet, there’s a NASA plan to send a spacecraft into the sun’s upper atmosphere to get a closer look at it and gather data on coronal mass ejections (CME). The spacecraft is called Solar Probe Plus (SPP), and it’s being designed and built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. If all goes as planned, it’ll launch in 2018. NASA probe narrowly avoids collision with Martian moon Phobos

NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft is orbiting Mars to study the planet’s atmosphere and how it interacts with the solar winds. Also high on its list of mission-critical goals is not crashing into things. That one almost went out the window recently, as MAVEN was found to be on a collision course with the Martian moon Phobos. NASA managed to prevent the impact, though. MAVEN stands for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN — yes, it’s pretty clunky by NASA acronym standards. It arrives in orbit of Mars two years ago and set ...
