Trump may open up exports of American guns

History of the modern assault-style rifle Gun companies are suffering a sales slump under the Trump administration. But a regulatory change could give them a boost overseas. The administration is considering shifting oversight of gun exports from the State Department to the Commerce Department. The proposed change would treat handguns more like commodities and less like military weapons, and loosen the bureaucracy for gun manufacturers. “They are currently hamstrung by considerable red tape,” gun industry analyst Rommel Dionisio wrote in a report for Aegis Capital. Right now, the State Department ...

Stephens takes down Keys to win US Open

5:59 PM ET Associated Press NEW YORK — Sloane Stephens never looked shaken by the setting or the stakes in her first Grand Slam final. Her opponent, Madison Keys, most definitely did. Stephens dominated her close friend Keys 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday to win the US Open, capping a remarkably rapid rise after sitting out 11 months because of foot surgery. The 83rd-ranked Stephens joins Kim Clijsters as the only unseeded US Open women’s champions in the Open era, which dates to 1968. This was the first all-American women’s final ...

Why the players box is a US Open hot spot

10:49 AM ET NEW YORK — On a star-studded summer night in 2014, Michael Jordan sat in Roger Federer‘s players box at the US Open, fixated on how smooth Federer looked on the court. Caroline Wozniacki once hosted Donald Trump, and the paparazzi snapped pictures of the future president and his wife, Melania, ever-stylish in her aviator glasses. Wozniacki didn’t actually know Trump at the time. Because everything in New York is bigger and weirder, the two players boxes at the US Open are among the most interesting consortiums in ...

Vintage PGA leaves plenty of options open at Quail Hollow

9:59 PM ET CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The predicted rain never arrived at Quail Hollow, but the thunder sure did. Thunder Bear, that is — or the translation for Thorbjorn Olesen‘s forename. The Dane who plays the European Tour grabbed the early first-round lead at Quail Hollow on Thursday by shooting 4-under-par 67, a revelation perhaps to those unaware that he has 11 professional victories, including four on his home tour. Kevin Kisner, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, matched him late in the day. At the PGA, there really ...

Class of 2017 can open Hall to excluded stars

8:31 PM ET COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — When Jeff Bagwell, Ivan Rodriguez and Tim Raines take to the podium for their Baseball Hall of Fame induction speeches on Sunday, in many respects there will be nothing remarkable about their time on the stage. Oh, it’s a remarkable thing to be receiving baseball’s highest honor. And because they are unique individuals with different lives and careers, the stories they tell can only be their own. But it will be a familiar scene, and that’s a good thing, because the annual renewal of ...
