Newly found Rubens portrait of King James I lover unveiled in Glasgow

GLASGOW, Scotland (Reuters) – A lost portrait by Rubens of the charming but unpopular Duke of Buckingham, a lover of King James I of England, has been found after an art historian spotted telltale signs of the Flemish master’s hand under centuries of grime and overpainting. Previously thought to be an inferior copy of a lost work by Peter Paul Rubens, the painting of the handsome bearded duke in a ruff lace collar and blue sash was identified at Pollok House, a mansion in the Scottish city of Glasgow. The ...

The work is just beginning for OKC and its newly crowned MVP

11:27 PM ET NEW YORK — The last nominee to show up, Russell Westbrook turned the corner with his wife and rolled his eyes at the bank of waiting cameras and reporters. With a simple white shirt, a gray tie, purple shades and jacket slung over his shoulder — Westbrook’s understated outfit was the biggest upset of the night — he glanced at the red carpet and shook his head. The man of the night skipped the cameras, the posing and the questions and headed inside. Russell Westbrook, after becoming ...

Newly Discovered Earth-Like Planet May Have the Right Conditions for Life

With every new exoplanet discovery, we seem to get that much closer to finding evidence of extraterrestrial life. A new exoplanet identified in orbit of a nearby star could be the best place to look yet. Astronomers have confirmed a star 39 light-years away plays host to a planet that is much more Earth-like than any we’ve been able to spot in the past. The planet, known as LHS 1140b, is larger than Earth, but it’s rocky and could well have liquid water on its surface. According to a new ...

Newly restored nuclear test footage now available on YouTube

The United States famously developed the first atomic bombs at the end of the second World War as part of the Manhattan Project. The bombs Little Boy and Fat Man that were dropped on Japan are the most well-known nuclear weapons ever developed, but there were over a thousand more detonations in the decades that followed. The US filmed every single nuclear test, and some of those films have now been declassified. However, the years have not been kind to them. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is in the process ...

Newly discovered rock formations could be fossils from earliest living organisms

Earth came into being roughly 4.5 billion years ago, and a new discovery in Canada indicates life developed not long after. Scientists studying ancient rock formations in Quebec have identified microscopic structures in the rock that they believe are the fossilized remains of microorganisms that lived on Earth between 3.7 and 4.28 billion years ago. That would be a few hundred million years earlier than previous estimates. As reported in the journal Nature, the fossils are composed of small knobs and filaments containing a large quantity of iron oxide (rust). ...

Newly discovered Babylonian tablets just rewrote the history of astronomy

Share This article Ancient astronomers were highly sophisticated observers of the night sky. Though they lacked telescopes or any kind of magnification device, stargazing is one of the only things you could do at night, particularly if your spouse was tired and the kitchen slave let the fire die. Five of the eight planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn — were well-known to ancient astronomers. Now, a new discovery suggests that the ancient Babylonians didn’t just track the planets — they used geometric methods that foreshadowed the development of ...
