Migrant crisis: Spain rescues 600 people in busiest day

Spain’s coastguard says it has rescued 600 migrants crossing from Morocco in a 24-hour period amid a spike in the number of migrant arrivals. The rescued migrants were in 15 vessels including toy paddleboats and a jet ski and included 35 children and a baby. About 100 migrant passengers are missing in the Mediterranean Sea after their boat sank off the coast of Libya. The Italian coastguard, which is conducting a search, said eight bodies had been recovered from the water, and four people had been rescued. More than 200 migrants are believed drowned in two shipwrecks off the coast of Libya, migration officials say. The UN refugee agency was told the news by survivors brought ashore on the Italian island of Lampedusa, spokeswoman Carlotta Sami said. Twelve bodies have been recovered. Fires are raging across parts of the “Jungle” migrant camp in Calais, three days into a French operation to demolish it. It was unclear who set the dozens of fires overnight and in the morning. Hungary is set to vote in a referendum on whether to accept mandatory EU quotas for relocating migrants.
