That’s not all adults by any means, but it’s well over half the adults in the country. Now we know that social security numbers, credit cards (in some cases), full names, and home addresses aren’t the only thing the hackers made off with. They got nearly 11 million driver’s licenses, too. That’s the latest from the Wall Street Journal, which ...

Australia jet and navy data stolen in 'extensive' hack

Sensitive information about Australia’s defence programmes has been stolen in an “extensive” cyber hack. About 30GB of data was compromised in the hack on a government contractor, including details about new fighter planes and navy vessels. The data was commercially sensitive but not classified, the government said. It did not know if a state was involved. Australian cyber security officials dubbed the mystery hacker “Alf”, after a character on TV soap Home and Away. The breach began in July last year, but the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) was not alerted ...

Equifax says March breach not related to major hack

Freezing your credit after Equifax hack…not so easy Hackers breached an Equifax payroll-related service in March, months before the company said criminals accessed the personal records of 143 million people. On Monday, Equifax said the March incident was unrelated to the recently disclosed hack that occurred between May and July 2017. “The criminal hacking that was discovered on July 29 did not affect the customer databases hosted by the Equifax business unit that was the subject of the March event,” Equifax said in a statement. Security breach disclosure laws require ...

E-Cigarettes Can Be Used to Hack Computers, Could Encourage Them to Start Smoking

So-called electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have become increasingly popular over the past few years, as the number of people who smoke traditional cigarettes in the United States has continued to decline. Proponents of e-cigarettes have argued that they can help people stop smoking (and I’m personally friends with one former smoker who used e-cigarettes as a stepping stone to quitting nicotine altogether). Proponents also say they’re less dangerous than conventional tobacco. Others have argued that the aerosolized fluid that e-cigarettes create can create health issues of its own. A number of businesses ...

The French media and public have been warned that spreading details of the attack would breach strict election rules and could bring criminal charges. The centrist Mr Macron faces far-right candidate Marine Le Pen on Sunday. A trove of documents – said to mix genuine files with fake ones – was released online ...

The Dallas siren hack was carried out with radio signals

Dallas residents were awoken last weekend by the blaring of tornado sirens, but the weather was calm. It went on for more than an hour and a half, and at the end of it city officials admitted the system had been hacked. That conjures up a certain image of someone hunched over a computer gaining access to critical government networks. However, in an updated statement, city manager T.C. Broadnax says the “hack” wasn’t carried out with a computer, but via radio frequency. The incident occurred just before midnight on Friday ...
