A bot just defeated one of the world's best video gamers

Elon Musk: We should regulate AI to keep public safe An artificial intelligence program just annihilated its human competition at a world championship video game contest. The AI win stunned the gaming community, because bots are generally considered inferior to expert human players. This one from Open AI — a nonprofit artificial intelligence research firm known mainly for its backing by serial entrepreneur Elon Musk, of Tesla(TSLA) and SpaceX fame — is a different story, and possibly a cautionary one. Open AI says its mission is to promote “responsible” AI ...

Gamers Claim to Want Backwards Compatibility. Why Don’t They Use It?

A brace of news reports this week highlighted an interesting scenario in console world (and arguably for PCs as well, though I’ll address that separately). First, Sony executive Jim Ryan was openly dismissive of backwards compatibility as a major focus or feature for the PS4, noting that few console players actually took advantage of the feature when it was available and that it wasn’t seen as important within Sony. “When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not ...

Nintendo Switch lets gamers play in both the real world and Zelda's

We played the Nintendo Switch The best part of Nintendo’s classic video game franchise “The Legend of Zelda” has always been its immersive world. This is why, when I was 11 years old, I would spend all day exploring the many lands of Hyrule in “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” on Nintendo 64. Now, as an adult, I (unfortunately) don’t have the luxury of sitting home for ten hours a day. Enter the Switch. With Nintendo(NTDOF)‘s latest platform, I don’t have to make that choice. Nintendo has always ...

Thieves use Pokémon Go to lure, mug unsuspecting gamers

The augmented reality game Pokémon Go launched last week to immediate acclaim. Early reports of game-related problems focused on server issues as the developer, Niantic, struggled to cope with launch-related loads. A very different kind of problem has already raised its head, however. According to a police report from O’Fallon, Missouri, thieves have used Pokémon Go to target individuals for mugging. According to the police report, the thieves used a beacon to attract individuals to a specific Pokéstop. Pokéstops are areas of interest where players can find items of interest. ...

EA’s Origin Access offers PC gamers unlimited access to select games

Share This article Electronic Arts, and by extension the Origin game service, is not particularly well-liked by gamers thanks to its heavy use of microtransactions and DLC packs. Perhaps it will earn some goodwill with a new service called Origin Access. PC gamers are able to subscribe to Access for a mere $ 4.99 per month and get early versions of unreleased games and unlimited access to The Vault, a Netflix-style selection of slightly older games. EA calls the early access feature “First Play Trials,” and stresses that these will be ...

Oculus CEO hopes Rift spurs gamers to upgrade their ‘crappy PCs’

Share This article The CEO of Oculus, Palmer Lucky, did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) yesterday, where he touched on several interesting topics — including some much-needed clarification on how the Oculus Store will function, and the future of the PC gaming market. According to Palmer, when Oculus talks about lining up exclusives, it’s talking about the Oculus Store, not the Oculus Rift. Games developers aren’t required to sign exclusivity contracts to publish in the Oculus Store, though Oculus will only sell its own titles through that venue. Lucky ...
