Adorable Japanese Camera Drone Now Lives Aboard the ISS

The International Space Station (ISS) has a new resident, but it’s not a human—it’s a drone. The small spherical drone was constructed by Japanese space agency JAXA with a special orientation system that allows it to maneuver around the ISS and capture video. Not only is it a convenient way to get footage from space without bugging astronauts, it’s an adorable little robot. There are, of course, plenty of cameras on the ISS already, but astronauts have better things to do than snap photos. JAXA says the ISS crew spend ...

Drone causes disruption at Gatwick airport

A drone flying close to Gatwick airport led to the closure of the runway and forced five flights to be diverted. An airport spokesman said the runway had been closed for two periods of nine minutes and five minutes on Sunday evening after the drone was sighted. Easyjet said four of its flights had been diverted, while British Airways said one plane had been sent to Bournemouth. Other flights had to circle the airport as a precaution. Sussex Police are investigating. The airport said: “Runway operations at Gatwick were suspended ...

Russian Company Is Selling Mods to Bypass DJI Drone Safety Features

DJI started in 2006 as a scrappy little Chinese company selling drone aircraft to a tiny niche market. However, interest in drones has exploded in recent years, and DJI has become a name known all over the world with around 70 percent of the consumer drone market. With that kind of recognition comes additional responsibilities. After a series of stern warnings from government regulators, DJI was forced to put safety measures in place on its drone aircraft. Specifically, the devices are limited in speed and where they can fly based ...

DJI to Drone Customers: Upgrade Your Firmware or Practically Give Up Flying

Drone manufacturer DJI has issued a firmware update for its drones, and it’s likely to cause controversy with at least some customers. In a statement emailed to all registered users, the company noted that current drone owners need to update the firmware on their devices in order to ensure “you will use the correct set of geospatial information and flight functions for your aircraft, as determined by your geographical location and user profile.” The update goes on to say existing flight safety limitations like geofencing boundaries and altitude limits remain ...

Hands On With the DJI Mavic Pro: A Serious Drone That Fits in Your Daypack

I’ve been a bit slow getting into flying serious drones, after my early experiences with nanocopters and the Parrot made me worry I’d crash an expensive piece of hardware. But with the introduction of DJI’s practically pocket-sized Mavic Pro ($ 999 at Amazon), I decided to take the plunge. At $ 1,000 plus the need for a smartphone, the unit isn’t really any less expensive than a Phantom 4. But it is impressively compact and crams most of the important features of a Phantom 4 Pro into its small chassis. 4K Video, ...

Best drone picks for every budget

Drones come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and prices. Depending on what you’re looking for, you can get a nanocopter for a few bucks, or an industrial-strength rig for thousands. We’ve picked out what we think are some of the best options for a variety of budgets and applications. Aside from the sheer fun of hobby flying, photography (and videography) are the most popular application of drones, so we have several of those among our picks. In the commercial market, site surveys, industrial inspections, and architectural research and planning ...

A US ally just shot down a $200 drone with a $3.4 million Patriot missile

The MIM-104 Patriot missile is a surface-to-air system that combines an advanced radar with an interceptor missile. First deployed in 1980 as an anti-aircraft weapon, ballistic missile interception capability was gradually added and enhanced throughout the 1980s and 1990s, though its success rate in conflicts like the first Gulf War remain highly disputed. But at least one Patriot missile had a confirmed hit, albeit not a very attractive one. Speaking at a military symposium this week, General David Perkins told the audience that one of our allies had successfully used ...

China to return seized US underwater drone, Pentagon says

The Pentagon says it has “secured an understanding” with China that it will return an underwater drone seized in the South China Sea. China captured the US vessel in international waters on Thursday. It has not explained why and accused the US of “hyping-up” the incident. US President-elect Donald Trump accused the Chinese of “stealing”. The incident is among the most serious military confrontations between the two powers for decades. The Pentagon said the drone, known as an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), was being used to carry out scientific research ...

Amazon completes first Prime Air drone delivery

Amazon started talking about its plans for Prime Air drone deliveries back in 2013, but at the time the US didn’t even allow commercial use of drone aircraft. Well, things still aren’t ideal for Amazon’s drone deliveries in the US, so it has started the first field test of Prime Air in the UK. A handful of customers in the Cambridge area can place orders with a nearby Amazon warehouse and have products flown over to them in just a few minutes. So, drone deliveries are a thing now — ...
