Microsoft’s Latest App Update Drives Negative Reviews in Windows Store

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. Microsoft was off to a good start with Windows 10 early on by offering free upgrades to anyone on older versions of the platform. It burned a lot of that goodwill with its heavy-handed attempts to get everyone to upgrade. Perhaps that made everyone hyper-conscious of Microsoft’s update approach, because a relatively minor app update recently sparked a torrent of negative reviews in the Microsoft Store. You know people have to be upset when they’re ...

Western Digital Reveals MAMR Technology That Could Allow 40TB Hard Drives

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. The capacity of solid state drives (SSDs) has been advancing steadily on traditional spinning hard drives over the last few years, and drive manufacturers haven’t been certain how much longer spinning drives could remain in the lead. Western Digital just surprised the storage industry by announcing its upcoming Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR) technology, which could keep the price per gigabyte of spinning drives lower than SSDs for at least the next decade. The odds ...

Seagate Unveils Massive 12TB BarraCuda Pro Desktop, IronWolf NAS Hard Drives

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. Seagate has announced a new set of 12TB hard drives for desktop and NAS drives. The new 12TB volumes are part of the BarraCuda Pro, IronWolf, and IronWolf Pro product families. The BarraCuda Pro family of drives all spin at 7200 RPM and carry five-year warranties; the new 12TB drives are a straightforward extension of the previous 10TB hardware. Like all BarraCuda Pro drives over 4TB, the 12TB drive offers 256MB of disk cache, though ...

Liquid Nitrogen Drives 18-Core Core i9-7980XE Above 6GHz

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. Intel’s latest Core i9-7980XE is a monster CPU and the fastest core you can buy in the consumer space today (for an extremely specific and well-heeled definition of ‘consumer,’ anyway). As with all high core count CPUs, however, Intel had to compromise on clock speeds. The all-core clock on a Core i9-7980XE drops to 3.4GHz under full load, to keep power consumption at a manageable level. Of course, if you’re overclocking with liquid nitrogen, you ...

20TB Hard Drives Will be Made of Glass

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use. Over the past few years, the rate of hard drive density improvements has dropped significantly. While Seagate and Western Digital have both pushed ahead with larger hard drives (often thanks to more platters and the use of helium), the actual rate of areal density increase has slowed these last few years. As Seagate and Western Digital push towards 20TB, glass substrates could be a critical component of that effort. Right now, only laptop drives use ...

CIA Tools to Spy on Offline Computers with USB Drives Leaked

No matter how secure you think a computer is, there’s probably someone out there armed with an exploit that could blow it wide open. The only way to be relatively sure no one will gain access to the data on that machine is to disconnect it from the internet and tightly control who can lay their hands on it in real life. A new cache of CIA documents posted on Wikileaks reveals the methods employed by the CIA to hack these so-called “air-gapped” machines. As with many exploits, it relies ...

Western Digital Adds Helium-Filled 10TB Drives to Consumer, Business Lines

Over the last few years, we’ve seen helium-filled hard drives go from an out-there idea to a shipping solution. Until now, however, these drives were effectively confined to the enterprise market, where high capacities and reliability are paramount. The high storage capacity of helium drives has helped differentiate them from SSDs, since hard drives still have vastly lower prices per GB than any solid state storage on the market, but consumer access has been slower to roll out. Western Digital did ship 8TB drives in its Red and Purple product ...

Review: The Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti is the first real 4K GPU, but who drives it better, AMD or Intel?

Today, Nvidia launched the GTX 1080 Ti ($ 699), its new highest-end consumer GPU. This release follows a pattern Nvidia established with the GTX 700 series back in 2013 of releasing a new workstation / prosumer GPU at the highest end of the market (the original Titan back then), followed by a cheaper consumer variant some months later. The “Ti” cards have historically been much better values than the Titan family, and we expect to see that trend continue here as well. The GTX 1080 Ti is a GP102-based design with 3,584 ...

Seagate plans 16TB drives for 2018, 20TB by 2020

Seagate may have made waves last year with its 60TB SSDs, but the company is still first and foremost a magnetic storage provider. During its conference call yesterday, the hard drive manufacturer laid out its near-term roadmap, with aggressive plans to ramp drive capacities over the next few years. Right now, Seagate’s highest-end drive tops out at 10TB, but the company plans to double that within the next three years, with 16TB drives rolling out as soon as mid-2018. Seagate, according to CEO Steve Luczo, is in the middle of ...
