Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe vows to stay on despite army pressure

Zimbabwe’s embattled leader Robert Mugabe has vowed to stay in power for several weeks, despite intense pressure on him to stand down now. In a live TV address, Mr Mugabe said he would preside over the ruling party’s congress in December. The Zanu-PF earlier sacked him as party leader, and gave him less than 24 hours to resign as president or be impeached. His grip on power has weakened since the military intervened on Wednesday, in a row over who should succeed him. A crisis was triggered after Mr Mugabe ...

Inflation steady despite food price rises

The UK’s key inflation rate remained steady at a five-and-a-half-year high of 3% in October, according to official figures. Falls in fuel prices were offset by higher food costs, particularly the price of potato crisps, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) had been expected to rise, with the Bank of England forecasting it would peak at 3.2% this autumn. The official target for the CPI is 2%. If the CPI inflation rate had risen above 3%, Bank of England governor Mark Carney would have ...

Despite lack of drama at top, CFP rankings hint at chaos to come

8:20 PM ET It sounds illogical, but the story of the CFP selection committee’s second rankings never was going to be the top four (or five). Businesslike wins by No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Notre Dame, plus quality road victories by No. 4 Clemson and No. 5 Oklahoma, suggested that nothing would change at the top, and it didn’t. Tuesday’s rankings reset instead would shine a spotlight on the next set of contenders, namely unbeatens Wisconsin and Miami. The committee’s message: There’s work left to do, ...

Media playback is unsupported on your device Jeremy Corbyn has defended his decision to appoint an MP to his shadow cabinet who had been reprimanded for allegations of inappropriate behaviour. The Labour leader said he was aware Kelvin Hopkins had been rebuked by the party’s chief whip in 2015 after concerns raised by a young activist. The 76-year old ...

Justice League Movie Is “Zack Snyder's DNA” Despite Being Finished By Joss Whedon

The questions around DC’s long-awaited Justice League movie intensified when, earlier this year, longtime DC director Zack Snyder stepped down from the film. He was replaced by Joss Whedon, who had served as the driving force for much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Justice League‘s cast and producers addressed some of those questions, including how much influence Whedon ultimately had over the film, during a press conference in London. “The movie is Zack’s DNA,” said Ben Affleck, who stars as Batman in Justice League. “The cast of the movie, the ...

Are changes to the 401(k) tax break in the works? Maybe, despite Trump

These popular tax breaks could be on the chopping block No, they won’t! Well, um… maybe they might. That’s about where things stand on the question of whether lawmakers drafting a tax reform bill will propose changes to 401(k) contribution limits or the tax incentive you get for saving in a 401(k). To hear President Trump tell it on Monday, they absolutely positively won’t make changes. “There will be NO change to your 401(k). This has always been a great and popular middle class tax break that works, and it ...

Despite Hayward injury, Celtics show all is not lost

2:31 AM ET CLEVELAND — There has been a certain buzz around the Boston Celtics since late August, when the team completed the league-wowing swap that delivered Kyrie Irving to Boston. The Celtics paid a hefty price to add a pair of All-Stars this summer, but there was a palpable energy around the team that centered on what might be possible with both Irving and prized free-agent signee Gordon Hayward at the top of a new-look roster. It took only five minutes, 15 seconds of regular-season action to wonder if ...
