Scientists create new fluorescent protein to monitor the cell cycle

Cellular mitosis is the basis of all higher life. When you need new cells, they can be created through a process called mitosis, whereby a cell makes a copy of itself. This process is highly regulated within the body, but sometimes those mechanisms fail and cells can grow out of control. We call that cancer. Medical researchers have an interest in knowing what phase of the cell cycle a specimen is going through, but it’s been hard to do that with live cells. A new technique from Stanford (PDF) allows the ...

New copper catalyst could close the carbon cycle, making ethanol from atmospheric CO2

In a quest to find a way to convert carbon dioxide into something useful, researchers from Oak Ridge National Labs in TN stumbled across an inexpensive, room-temperature catalyst for turning CO2 into ethanol. The new catalyst is made of copper nanoparticles, electroplated onto a substrate of vapor-deposited, nitrogen-doped graphene nanospikes, all atop a slice of n-type silicon semiconductor. “We discovered somewhat by accident that this material worked,” said lead author Adam Rondinone. “We were trying to study the first step of a proposed reaction when we realized that the catalyst was doing ...

Certain Samsung washers at risk of explosion, even without a Note 7 in the spin cycle

If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t consider your washing machine a potential safety hazard, much less a threat to life and limb. Early industrial washers were known for a complete lack of safety features that made using them genuinely hazardous. But modern industrial design fixed this particular issue decades ago — or so we thought. A new report from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Samsung itself says the company is investigating reports washers manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016 were prone to explosion. Samsung has issued ...

Braves' Freeman hits for cycle in win over Reds

2:52 AM ET ESPN.com news services ATLANTA — Extra innings gave Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman the chance to do what no other Atlanta player had done in nearly eight years. Freeman completed the cycle with a leadoff single in the 11th inning against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. He doubled in the third, tripled in the fourth and hit his 11th homer in the sixth. “It would have meant nothing if we didn’t win,” he said after the Braves prevailed 9-8 in 13 innings. Freddie Freeman had the ...

Could the 9.7-inch iPad Pro kickstart a tablet upgrade cycle?

Apple’s new 9.7-inch iPad Pro, introduced yesterday, is in some respects a smaller version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro introduced last year. While it might lack the one-more-thing wow factor Steve Jobs kept hidden until the end of a product announcement, it may have enough mini-wows to entice customers. The big question here is while iPhone owners may trade in every year or two, iPads are generally on a slower upgrade cycle; will the iPad Pro change things? My own last full-size (9.7-inch) iPad purchase was the iPad 2 in 2011. It runs the ...
