Unlucky seven: Eliminator cuts Irish, six others from playoff race

Oct 29, 2017 The last time we gathered here a mere two weeks ago, 17 teams remained in contention for the College Football Playoff. And well, that was before the emergence of the Turnover Chain as a societal touchstone, before Bedlam produced 114 points, before Alabama nearly lost to another college football team and before Ohio State was blown out by Iowa, which one week later gained 66 yards. (Yes, in four quarters.) So much has happened. Also, the College Football Playoff selection committee released two sets of rankings, inserting ...

Morgan Stanley: Trump tax cuts could create boom — then a bust

Trump’s chief economics adviser defends tax math President Trump argues the American economy “desperately” needs “massive” tax cuts. And there’s no question that Wall Street is pumped about it. Others are less confident that adding expensive medicine to a healthy economy is such a wise idea right now. Morgan Stanley warned in a report this week that enacting aggressive tax cuts to businesses and individuals risks “overheating” the economy and causing stocks to “boom then bust.” The concern is that slashing the corporate tax rate to 35% from 20% could ...

Marty Baron cuts through Trump noise, stays focused on Washington Post's mission

Marty Baron has learned to tune out President Trump’s insults against the press. “It’s almost become like background music to the work that we do every day,” the Washington Post’s executive editor told Brian Stelter this week in a rare TV interview. But Baron still takes Trump’s comments seriously. “The administration’s continuing attack on the press and its effort to undermine our credibility” is a real danger to newsrooms like the Post, he said. Trump’s moniker for the Post is the “Amazon Washington Post.” “It’s an absurd thing to say,” ...

Sources: Browns boot Osweiler as part of cuts

6:02 PM ET The Cleveland Browns released Brock Osweiler on Friday, one day before they had to trim their roster to a league-minimum 53 players, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Police in England and Wales would struggle to deal with riots on the scale of 2011 due to budget cuts, an officer who oversees funding has said. Chief Constable Dave Thompson, of West Midlands Police, said the “strain is showing” after multiple terror attacks. “We’d have real challenges in dealing with something like the 2011 riots again,” he wrote on the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) blog on Friday. The home secretary has admitted that police resources are “very tight”. Amber Rudd told MPs on Thursday that the police response ...
