Brexit: UK 'must not allow itself to be blackmailed'

The UK must not allow itself to be “blackmailed” by the EU over its Brexit settlement bill in order to start trade talks, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox has said. He said a bad Brexit deal would damage both British and European companies. Businesses have become impatient with the slow progress of the Brexit negotiations, he added. The latest Brexit talks have stalled over the failure to reach agreement on the UK’s so-called divorce bill. Both the UK and EU have expressed frustration at the pace of the talks. The ...

Trump executive order aims to allow Arctic drilling

Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at reducing restrictions on oil drilling in the Arctic and Atlantic in order to “unleash American energy”. The US president said it would create “thousands and thousands” of jobs, despite a downturn in the oil market. It could undo a ban put in place by Barack Obama in order to protect swathes of the ocean from development. But Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said the decision was better than being held hostage by “foreign entities”. Getting rid of Mr Obama’s environmental protections was ...

Apple Refuses to Allow iPhone, Mac Recycling

There’s a pair of near-perfectly juxtaposed stories about Apple in the news today. First, Apple has released its own environmental progress report for 2017. The news here is generally good, as you’d expect from a self-prepared report, but it highlights Apple’s success in moving to fully renewable energy and to use less power across its entire product stack. Other investigations into the company’s practices, however, haven’t been so rosy. In the report, Apple claims that it wants to move to products that are fully recyclable. The report reads: Traditional supply chains ...

Hot shooting, strong defense, rest allow Warriors to rout Mavericks

1:50 AM ET DALLAS — The Golden State Warriors blew out the Dallas Mavericks112-87 in another dominant defensive performance. Despite coming off a back-to-back and resting Andre Iguodala with the ever unusual “hip tightness,” the Warriors were in full form, ending the game quickly and brutally. Like so many Golden State wins, the opponent started with a spark, only to slowly sputter and fade from the action. A cohesive defense will do that. It has perhaps been the most underrated aspect of the Warriors’ season, a buoy taken for granted ...

Allow mobile phone network roaming in UK, urge MPs

Mobile phone companies should allow customers to roam between networks in areas of the UK where they struggle to get reception, a group of MPs has said. The British Infrastructure Group said foreign visitors get better coverage, as they are not tied to any provider, so can use the strongest signal. The report said 17 million customers had poor reception at home and it named 525 areas with non-existent coverage. Phone companies insist they are working hard to make their coverage better. Little improvement The cross-party group of about 90 ...

Facebook to allow graphic posts if deemed 'newsworthy'

Facebook’s plan to fight terrorism Facebook is taking steps to avoid a repeat of last month’s Napalm Girl controversy, while potentially opening itself up to a new headache. Facebook (FB, Tech30) announced Friday that it plans to cut down censorship of offensive posts that may violate its community standards against nudity and violence — that is, if those posts are deemed to be in the public interest. “In the weeks ahead, we’re going to begin allowing more items that people find newsworthy, significant, or important to the public interest — ...

Syria conflict: Russia to halt Aleppo action to allow aid in

Russian forces are due to suspend military action in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo shortly to allow in desperately needed humanitarian aid. It is not clear if Syrian rebel groups will also cease fire during the daily three-hour window. But UN officials say that is too short to take in enough to help the large numbers of people in need. Intense fighting has been continuing in Aleppo between rebels and Russian-backed Syrian government forces. There are also reports of a toxic gas attack on a rebel-held area. Medical staff ...
