Social Security Administration warns about fradulent callers trying to steal your checks

A new telephone scam is targeting Social Security recipients. The Social Security Administration is warning that schemers are impersonating government agents and stealing people’s benefits. In a blog post Wednesday, the agency’s Office of the Inspector General said people have been receiving calls from a number with a 323 area code. “The caller claims to be an [agency] employee, and in some instances, tells the victim that they are due a 1.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase of their Social Security benefits,” the post reads. The fraudsters attempt to “acquire personally ...

Are Spanish olive producers playing dirty on trade? Trump administration is investigating

The Trump administration is taking its fight for American trade to the market for Spanish olives. The U.S. Department of Commerce said Thursday that it’s launching investigations into whether Spanish olive producers are violating fair trade laws. Investigators are concerned that the foreign producers are “dumping” olives into the U.S. — meaning Spanish olives are selling in the United States for less than they would sell for in Spain. That goes against laws that seek to protect American producers from being unfairly undercut by outside competition. It’s not a big ...

Trump administration: We may ignore World Trade Organization

The Trump administration could make a major break from U.S. trade policy and disregard the rulings of the World Trade Organization. In a paper released Wednesday night, the administration indicated that the U.S. is not bound to the WTO’s rulings on trade disputes. That would be a big shift away from the practice of previous presidents. “Even if a WTO dispute settlement panel…rules against the United States, such a ruling does not automatically lead to a change in U.S. law or practice,” the paper said. “The Trump administration will aggressively ...
