Child and teenage obesity levels have risen ten-fold in the last four decades, meaning 124m boys and girls around the globe are too fat, according to new research. The analysis in the Lancet is the largest of its kind and looks at obesity trends in over 200 countries. In the UK, one in every 10 young people aged five to 19, is obese. Fresh rail strikes hit services across England

Rail strikes across England are under way for the second time this week. RMT union members at Southern, Merseyrail, Arriva Rail North and Greater Anglia have begun a 24-hour walkout. The industrial action is over plans to make train doors driver-only operated. Rail companies have said this means a guard is no longer needed but some workers believe safety procedures would be compromised. Union members at South Western have also voted to strike, but any action first needs to be agreed with the executive body. The operator said it planned ...

Barcelona attacks: Hunt for key suspect extended across Europe

The hunt for the driver who killed 13 people in last week’s attack in Barcelona has been extended across Europe, Catalan officials say. Police say they have now confirmed the driver’s identity, but would not reveal his name. But Catalan official Joaquim Forn told local radio: “Everything suggests the van driver is Younes Abouyaaqoub”. Authorities say they cannot rule out the possibility that he has slipped across the border to France. New CCTV footage appears to show him fleeing the scene of the attack on foot. Three images in El ...

Heroes Of The Storm's New Character Can Push You Across The Map

Another new character is on the way to Heroes of the Storm, and this time it’s Stukov, the zerg-infested human character who featured prominently in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. He’s a Support character with some unique mechanics, but what really sets him apart are his Heroic ability options. One of Stukov’s distinguishing features is his giant, zerg-looking arm, and it features prominently into both of his Heroics. Flailing Swipe is relatively mundane, swiping in a large cone in front of him three times to deal damage and knock ...

‘NotPetya’ Ransomware Locking Down Computers Across the World

A new strain of ransomware is currently hitting computers across the world. Like the recent WannaCry attack, this one, called NotPetya, uses an NSA exploit leaked earlier this year. This new malware is already popping up in other European countries, as well as in the US. You can tell NotPetya from other forms of ransomware from the stripped down notice on the screen; it’s a ...

Apple is Lobbying Against Right-to-Repair Legislation Across the Country

Over the past few years, there’s been a burgeoning movement to guarantee the right of citizens to repair their own electronic devices, and a rise in corporate lobbying designed to defeat these initiatives. In some cases, companies like John Deere have argued that the firmware they run on a tractor constitutes a trade secret that farmers cannot be allowed to access. Companies like Apple have tended to take a subtler route and not advertise its stance as much. But public access records in New York State reveal that the company ...

National lampoons European vacation: Sammy Solis shares epic trip across the pond

8:17 AM ET The best part about getting bounced from the playoffs early? Extra vacation time. Just ask reliever Sammy Solis, who took full advantage of yet another early exit by the Washington Nationals, who lost in the National League Division Series for the third time in three tries. Instead of sticking around and watching perhaps the greatest World Series finish ever, the 28-year-old lefty embarked on a 17-day, six-country European jaunt. “I was so over it by that point,” Solis said of the epic Cubs/Indians affair. “I wanted us ...

Detectors have picked up an unexplained wave of radioactivity across Europe

France’s public institute for radiological and nuclear risks (IRSN) said they detected tiny amounts of iodine-131, a radionuclide of human origin, in the “ground-level atmosphere” all across Europe back. The isotope was first detected in the second week of January over northern Norway, after which it moved over Finland, Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, France, and Spain. Levels have already returned to normal. “Since only Iodine-131 was measured, and no other radioactive substances, we think it originates from a pharmaceutical company producing radioactive drugs. Iodine-131 is used for treatment of cancer,”Astrid Liland, ...
