Governing body declares: No IP addresses for governments that shut down internet access

One of the fundamental strengths of the internet is its inter-connectivity. But certain regimes, when faced with political dissidents, protests, or even students possibly cheating on their exams, have taken to shutting down internet access. The purpose is to deny their citizens access to tools like Google, Twitter, and Facebook, which can be used to document what’s happening and reach out to coordinate resistance. Now a governing body has declared that there should be no IP addresses awarded to governments that cut off internet access to their citizens. These infringing governments ...

Google Fiber is slashing employees, preparing to deploy wireless access points instead of fiber optics

Over the past year, it’s become increasingly clear that Alphabet, Google’s new parent company that runs the Access division responsible for deploying Google Fiber, hasn’t been thrilled with that segment’s performance or cost structure. Now, word is that Access employees are being reassigned or terminated, while plans to expand Google Fiber beyond its current markets are being substantially overhauled. Going forward, Google wants to offer wireless service, not fiber-to-the-home. Trump backs Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines

US President Donald Trump has infuriated environmentalists by signing executive orders that support two controversial oil pipelines. The new Republican president backed the Keystone XL and Dakota Access projects, provided American steel is used. The Obama administration in late 2015 halted Keystone, which would carry crude from Canada to Texas. The Army decided last year to explore other routes for the Dakota pipeline amid huge protests by Native Americans. In the White House on Tuesday morning, Mr Trump said both projects would be subject to renegotiated terms and conditions. As ...

Brexit: UK 'could change economic model' if single market access denied

The UK may be forced to change its “economic model” if it is locked out of the single market after Brexit, Chancellor Philip Hammond has said. Mr Hammond said the government would not “lie down” and would “do whatever we have to do” to remain competitive. He had been asked by a German newspaper if the UK could become a “tax haven” by further lowering corporation tax. Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn said his comments sounded like “a recipe for some kind of trade war with Europe”. Single market or customs union ...
