This post contains Westworld spoilers.
One of the most compelling storylines from last night’s episode of Westworld was the revelation that Bernard, the host, is actually built in Arnold’s image. Not only that, but Bernard learns he must move past his “cornerstone” event–his son’s death–in order to finally learn this. Bernard’s story is quite complex. Thankfully, HBO has now put out a new video in which showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as Bernard actor Jeffrey Wright, discuss the huge reveal and what it might mean.
Nolan, Joy, and Wright don’t go very deep with their explanations–Westworld is at times intentionally ambiguous, it seems–but it’s pretty neat to hear what they have to say on the subject.
“Some of the most exciting moments for me are when it seems like we’re existing in the world of fantasy or we’re existing in the world of technological futuristic reality, and all of a sudden those worlds collide in ways that I think are shocking,” Wright says. “And bring us back into an understanding that everything that we may presume to be reality is actually something entirely different.”
Westworld Season 1 is coming to an end. Episode 9 aired last night, while the Season 1 finale is coming up this Sunday, December 4. A new trailer for the finale was released today–watch it here.
Westworld has been renewed for a “mysterious and exciting” Season 2, though it’s not expected to premiere until late 2017 or 2018. Season 2 will reveal more about what powers the robots, known as hosts, but other plot details are being kept under wraps. Man in Black actor Ed Harris has teased that he will be “involved” in Season 2, though it remains to be seen what that means.
