Why the Bucks built the longest team in the NBA

This story appears in ESPN The Magazine’s Oct. 30 NBA Preview issue. Subscribe today! In a cramped Uber ride on a frigid Saturday night this past March in Boston, a parlor game took shape. Sitting alongside an NBA wise man with a depth of front office experience, FiveThirtyEight editor Nate Silver asked, “If you had one chip to place on the NBA championship in 2025, who would you bet on?” The former executive paused, then began enumerating how to prognosticate eight years into the future. He considered market appeal, naming ...

Baker won't return as Nationals manager in '18

2:50 PM ET Dusty Baker will not return to the Washington Nationals in 2018, the team announced Friday, a move that has “surprised and disappointed” the longtime manager. “I really thought this was my best year,” Baker told USA Today Sports. “We won at least 95 games each year and won the division back-to back-years but they said they wanted to go a different direction. It’s hard to understand.” The Nationals’ season ended Oct. 12 with a Game 5 loss to the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series. ...

LaVar Ball retorts: 'Who is Patrick Beverley?'

10:16 AM ET LOS ANGELES — LaVar Ball fired back at Patrick Beverley after the LA Clippers guard shouted an obscenity as he walked into the locker room that was presumably about Lonzo Ball, who was making his debut as point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. After the Clippers routed the Lakers 108-92 Thursday and held Ball to three points, four assists and nine rebounds in his debut, Beverley was heard screaming, “Weak ass m—–f—–. Bring him out on the court with me and I will tear his ass ...

Even with feel-good win, Raiders have a Marshawn Lynch dilemma

3:37 AM ET ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Oakland Raiders have a potentially season-killing locker room dynamic to solve. Especially in the wake of a potentially season-saving 31-30 win against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night to end a four-game losing streak and improve to 3-4 overall. The question? Who, exactly, was Marshawn Lynch running on to the field to protect when a skirmish broke out in the wake of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr getting blasted by Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters in the second quarter? It was a hit that ...

It was Clayton Kershaw's night, but he was happy to share it

4:14 AM ET CHICAGO — Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw has been so good for so long, it’s easy to forget about how young he still is. It’s also easy to understand why his teammates seemed as happy about the fact that Kershaw was going to the World Series as they were for themselves. It was a day a long time coming in Los Angeles. On Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, behind a sterling outing from Kershaw, and an unbelievable three-homer explosion from Enrique Hernandez, the Dodgers hammered the Chicago ...

Who should the Dodgers want to face in the World Series?

12:36 AM ET CHICAGO — The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be on board with our content plan at ESPN, because just as they did during the National League Division Series against Arizona, they made such quick work of the Chicago Cubs that it gives us plenty of time to sit back and ponder which opponent L.A. should want to see in the next round, the World Series. Since home-field advantage in the Fall Classic is now determined by overall record, the Dodgers hold that advantage no matter who they ...

Party like it's 1988! Hernandez, Dodgers slam Cubs to reach World Series

12:01 AM ET CHICAGO — In the end, it was most fitting. The Los Angeles Dodgers‘ quest for a pennant ended on the field where it began nearly a year ago, on the ancient grounds of Wrigley Field. It was most fitting that the winning pitcher was the Dodgers’ longtime ace, Clayton Kershaw, who flashed his best stuff in two months and dazzled the Chicago Cubs for six innings. In years past, the Dodgers might have asked Kershaw to do more. This season, they didn’t need it. It was most ...

NFL to look into why no Cam presser Thursday

Coach Ron Rivera also was unaware of why his quarterback did not participate. “I just found out,” Rivera said. “I thought he had a press conference today, but apparently not.” Star players are required to be available to the media during the week while in season. ...
