Star Citizen will use Vulkan, not DirectX 12, DX11 to be phased out

Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) was one of the early companies that announced DirectX 12 support, but the company has changed its mind on that API. Instead of using Microsoft’s DX12, Star Citizen will use Vulkan, with DirectX 11 support also being phased out. The news comes from Ali Brown, director of graphics engineering at CIG. Here’s how he described the change: Years ago we stated our intention to support DX12, but since the introduction of Vulkan which has the same feature set and performance advantages this seemed a much more ...

Teardowns confirm Nintendo Switch is built on standard Tegra X1 processor

Ever since Nintendo announced the Switch, it’s been cagey about the exact details of the platform. That’s nothing new for the company, which frequently goes out of its way to obfuscate its own hardware’s capabilities. But there’s been some question as to whether the Switch contained a bog standard Tegra chip, or if there was something a little more exciting inside it. Doing custom work on a chip is also nothing new for Nintendo; the Wii U had an unusual custom triple-core processor with an asymmetric L2 cache, alongside on-die ...

Atari 8-bit fans: this is your next read

I’ve got a shelf full of computer history books, many of which I love and have reread several times. But I wanted to write one that focused on the first real computer I grew up with, the one that eventually led me to the tech industry and journalism: the Atari 800. We’ve covered vintage computing many times before on ExtremeTech. I wrote a retro gaming feature back in 2010 (and a 2017 rewrite of that is in the works and will be ready real soon now). But I’ve always wanted ...

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an amazing game by all accounts, with an incredibly high sell rate (as of last week, something like 93% of Switch owners bought BotW). Much has been written about the game, from how turning off Wi-Fi may improve performance to an in-depth comparison of how it plays against the Wii U version. But there’s one potential issue to be aware of, should you choose to hand the game to a different player to start from scratch. If you try to start ...

We’re all dying to see if BioWare delivered the goods. Here’s the story: After a 600-year journey, ships from the Milky Way are arriving in Andromeda in the year 2819. GameStop: Nintendo Switch Sales “Phenomenal,” Could Outpace Wii

The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo’s fastest-selling console ever in many major markets. Now, GameStop has shed some light on how the hybrid system is performing at its stores–and it’s strong. Speaking to GameRant, GameStop merchandising director Eric Bright said the Switch “could possibly eclipse the Wii.” That system was a massive, worldwide hit, selling more than 100 million systems.
